TOMRA Sorting Sp. z o.o., headquartered in Katowice (ul. Ligocka 103), is the Polish company of the Norwegian TOMRA Group; its sole shareholder is TOMRA Sorting AS. According to the register, its main activity is the wholesale of machinery and equipment, and its scope also includes the installation, repair and maintenance of industrial machinery, software and engineering consultancy. The company has been registered in the Polish National Court Register under KRS 0000317939 since 2008. The group lists the Katowice address as the office of TOMRA Recycling and TOMRA Food; it has been developing sensor-based sorting technology since acquiring TiTech in 2004.
The TOMRA Group, founded in 1972 as a maker of reverse vending machines for used beverage containers, is now active in container collection (Collection), food sorting (Food), mining (Mining) and waste and metal recycling (Recycling). According to the group, it has around 119,900 installations in more than 100 countries and over 5,800 employees. For recycling it offers sensor-based sorting systems such as AUTOSORT, FINDER and X-TRACT for metals, which combine optical and electromagnetic sensors with object-recognition software, including Deep Learning-based solutions.
In metal recycling, TOMRA units recover metals from shredder residue and separate mixed non-ferrous metals into monofractions: from Zorba they extract copper, brass, wrought and cast aluminium and heavy metals; they recover copper from insulated wire regardless of the insulation (PVC, PP, PE, rubber); and they sort metals from end-of-life vehicles. The group notes that recycled copper requires up to 85% less energy than primary production. As an IGMNiR member, TOMRA Sorting represents suppliers of sensor-based sorting technology for non-ferrous scrap recycling.
