About the company

REGAIN Sp. z o.o., headquartered in Wejherowo (Plac Jakuba Wejhera 2/1), is a technology company engaged in the environmentally friendly processing of lithium-ion batteries, registered in the Polish National Court Register under KRS 0000767797 (entered in 2019). According to the register, its principal activity is research and experimental development in natural sciences and engineering; the entry also covers waste collection and treatment and materials recovery. The company runs a prototype workshop with an assembly hall in Gdańsk (ul. Siennicka 26F) and a recycling laboratory in Gdańsk (ul. Gabriela Narutowicza 11/12).

REGAIN is carrying out a research programme on the direct recycling of lithium-ion batteries and is preparing to commission a commercial installation. The technology comprises a proprietary pre-treatment that allows batteries to be processed in any state of charge, energy-efficient physical-mechanical separation with fractionation and enrichment of cathode and anode material, and processing in closed loops; the company has a demonstration-scale prototype installation. From April 2024 to March 2028 it is implementing a project co-financed under the European Funds for a Modern Economy programme (SMART Path), aimed at a process with waste of no more than 1% and energy use of 145 kWh per tonne of batteries; commercialisation of the results is planned for early 2029.

The products of the process – black mass, electrolyte, solvents, cathode and anode powders, as well as copper and aluminium – are returned to the battery industry value chain and the circular economy. The company describes the process as closed-loop, waste-free and emission-free, with a multi-stage safety system protecting against electrical, fire and chemical hazards. As an IGMNiR member, REGAIN represents lithium-ion battery recycling technologies being developed in Poland and the recovery of the materials they contain, including copper and aluminium.
